Every once in a while I stumble across something which needs to be shared, this is one of them. I received an email from 123-reg advertising their new 'Dedicated Cloud Servers' which they advertise as 'the future of hosting'.
Reading into the offering and it does appear like a great idea. They have taken the bottleneck out of virtualising in the traditional sense by having dedicated hard disk drives. The CPU and RAM are shared as it would be normally in a VPS/VDS.
Not only did I think at first it was a great idea, but the prices were even better. For £109.99/month you received:
Sounds too good to be true, right? Well it is. You can imagine my excitement when this offering came up, at my ability to pass on hosting savings to our clients but the first port of call is always the terms of service and SLA.
After digging around I had no luck finding ToS nevermind an SLA so I contacted support. I was sent this link. Don't worry going off and reading this, essentially it says "We don't guarantee anything." From the document:
Despite this, due to a number of circumstances that are beyond 123-reg's control, you acknowledge that given the nature of such services, 123-reg cannot guarantee that the Services, when delivered via the internet, will be uninterrupted or error free.
With this little bit of info, I went back to live chat to try and dig a little deaper. A representitive of 123 reg called Adelina spoke to me:
Will (18:14): Hello. Am I right in thinking that there is no SLA with the cloud dedicated servers? Based on the terms here: http://www.123-reg.co.uk/terms/cloud-and-dedicated-cloud-servers.shtml it would appear so...
Adelina (18:19): Hello, according to our Terms&Conditions we will provide an uninterrupted service.
So Adelina says according to their Terms & Conditions they will provide "Uninteruped service" - well we know this is not true from the link I sent her. The chat was left with Adelina creating a ticket for one of her supervisors to get back to me. Eventually one did, Adam said:
For the Cloud Servers we have a 99.9% network up time guarantee and a response SLA of 4 hours. We do only support the hardware and the network also.
'OK, great - but then this contradicts with your terms on the link you sent', I responded. Eventually I was left with:
Apologies for the delay in my response. I have checked with our management team in regards to your questions about SLA's and have been advised that we do not provide SLA's for the Cloud Servers or the VPS packages we have. We only provide these for our dedicated server options. Apologies for any confusion caused.
So, friends, colleagues and digital agencies alike - if you want a professional service do not use 123 reg. The age old saying of pay what you get for wins once more.
Will.
